French unions call further strikes

FRANCE - Commuters in Paris and throughout the country have braced themselves for a further wave of strikes and demonstrations over President Nicholas Sarkozy's proposed reforms to the special pension regimes (régimes spéciaux) provided to public sector workers.

Responding to the threats, Prime Minister François Fillon said maintaining the status quo was “no longer possible”, and “nobody could imagine the reform of the régimes spéciaux would be easy”. ...
